Send new customers to your form the first time they sign in

Collect additional customer information when customers sign in with Shopify's Customer Accounts

With Shopify's Customer Accounts, new customers get an account just by signing in with a code, so they may never see your Customer Fields sign-up form. Shopify's Collect additional customer information setting fixes that. It sends a customer to a form page the first time they sign in, and when they submit, they go back to where they were originally headed.

Use it if you:

  • collect details like a company name, tax ID, or birthday when customers sign up

  • approve customers before they can see prices or buy

This only works on Shopify's Customer Accounts, not Legacy customer accounts.

Storefront form with Account options set to Default or Require account approval. See Theme app extensions.

Account/Checkout forms don't support account approval, so approval forms go on a storefront page.

Turn on the setting

Once your form page is published:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Customer accounts. In Authentication, click Manage. Or open the Authentication page directly.

  2. Under Sign-in experience, turn on Collect additional customer information.

  3. In Search or paste a form link, choose your page, then click Save.

For the Custom profile page, the field shows Custom profile page in Customer accounts.

For a store page, it shows the page's name, like Registration in Online store.

What customers see

A new customer signs in with their email and Shopify's one-time code. Instead of going straight to the next page, they land on your form page. After they submit the form, Customer Fields automatically sends them back to where they would've originally landed after login, using the return link Shopify adds to the page address.

If you approve customers

When a customer submits an approval form, Customer Fields saves their application as pending and sends the Application received email. The user is automatically redirected, so they don't see your form's success message.

At this point, they already have a Shopify account from signing in, so make sure to keep your prices and pages behind the approved tag if you don't want to allow browsing before approval. See Keep approving customers on Shopify's Customer Accounts.

Limits

First sign-in only

Shopify sends each customer to the form once, on their first sign-in. Existing customers aren't sent there. For existing customers, use a Call to action banner or Notification card. See Customer account extensions.

Optional

Customers can leave the page without filling in the form.

Checkout

Customers who sign in during checkout aren't sent to the form, unless you enable the Shopify setting requiring customers to sign in before checkout.

Multipass

Customers who sign in with Multipass aren't sent to the form.

Redirects

Your form's redirect settings and success message are skipped. On the Custom profile page, Back to profile is hidden.
