Shorter sign-up: collect the rest with a post-purchase form

Keep your sign-up form short and ask for nice-to-have details in a post-purchase form after checkout.

Every field on a sign-up form is a reason for someone to give up. You can keep sign-up short and ask for the rest in a post-purchase form on the Thank you page, once the customer has bought from you.

Decide what goes where

Keep at sign-up

What you need before someone can buy, like details for account approval or a business licence number.

Move to after checkout

What's nice to have, like a birthday, preferences, or how they heard about you.

Set it up

  1. Remove the nice-to-have fields from your sign-up form.

  2. Create an Account/Checkout form with those fields. To keep saving to the same metafields, open each field's Data column settings and choose Select an existing data column.

  3. Add the form to the Thank you page. See Add a post-purchase survey or form to the Thank you page.

Catch customers who skip it

The Thank you page shows once per order, and only to signed-in customers. Add the same form to the customer's account too, so they can fill it in later:

  • A Custom profile block on the Profile page, where customers can add or edit their answers.

  • A Call to action banner or Notification card to remind them. Both disappear once the form is submitted.

See Customer account extensions for each one's settings.

Good to know

  • Guests don't see the Thank you page form. If you want every customer asked, turn on Require customers to sign in to their account before checkout in Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin.

  • Leave Hide if previously submitted on, so customers aren't asked again on every order.
